OMAHA, Neb. - With
a roster featuring a balance of nine newcomers and nine returning players, the Haskell Womens Basketball Team embarked on their 2023-2024 Season. The Haskell Women's Basketball team split the opening games of the season at the CSM Classic securing their first victory against York University and a narrow loss against Waldorf.
Haskell vs York University
In the first game of the season, Marilyn Goodman contributed to the first points of the game by scoring two free throws. Offensive and defensive efforts were evident for Haskell, but York managed to capitalize on early turnovers and missed opportunities giving them the lead to end the first half. It was in the second half where things began to pick up for the Fightin' Indians as their defense played a pivotal role in their comeback. Haskell intensified their defensive efforts, limiting York's scoring opportunities and allowing Haskell to secure crucial rebounds and transitions into fast-break opportunities. Players like Marilyn Goodman, Malia Jacobs, and Layla Harjo continued with their strong offensive performance to finish with a win over York University.
Haskell vs Waldorf
In their second game of the season, Haskell Indian Nations fought hard against a well-rounded Waldorf team. In the first half, it was Janae Kalama and Malia Jacobs who kept the momentum, contributing to crucial points to keep the Indians in the lead. As the second half approached it was clear both teams were hungry for victory, the Haskell Indians found themselves in a closely contested battle until the last minutes of play. Though the loss to Waldorf, Janae Kalama lead the team in both points (14) and assists (5).
