OTTAWA, Kan. - The Haskell Men's Basketball team concluded the Braves Booster Classic with back-to-back losses over the weekend, falling short to the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) and Ottawa University.
Haskell vs University of Saint Mary (Kan.)
First game jitters were evident in a fiercely contested game against the Saint Mary Spires for the Indians. The Spires began the game with a quick lay up, and the Haskell Indians answered with a successful jumper by Nehemiah Boykins. From there on the spires went on a run until the Indians came within six points with seven minutes into the first half. The Saint Mary Spires outscored the Haskell Indians 87- 65. Despite the loss both Bansi King and Masen Spoonhunter combined 10 points for the Haskell Indians demonstrating commendable shooting accuracy.
Haskell vs Ottawa University
With high hopes of redeeming the loss on the first day of the classic the Haskell Indian Nations Men's Basketball team were up against a fast paced play from Ottawa University. To start the game Ottawa scored quick buckets to put themselves up five points until Masen Spoonhunter was fouled and scored two free throws for the Indians. Haskell's defensive efforts were evident, limiting Ottawa's opportunities which helped the Indians come within three points to end the first half. At the start of the second half, Haskell intensified their efforts with a three pointer from Spoonhunter to stay close with Ottawa's consistent scoring. Ottawa University began to pull away and extend their lead with eight minutes to go in the second half. Haskell Indian Nations Masen Spoonhunter, Bansi King, Ira Blackbear, and Nehemiah Boykins continued to fight hard and score points but Ottawa's ability to maintain offensive efficiency allowed them to steadily increase their lead. Ultimately, Ottawa's scoring and defensive plays enabled them to secure a substantial lead and win the game with a final score of 89 - 69.
